Search for a New Tomorrow: Poems from Kenyan Schools

This is the second collection of winning poems written by Kenyan school children for the National Poetry Competition, sponsored by the British Council. Under the themes “Something New”, “Tomorrow” and “Search”, the young people in the collection show their concerns about the possibility of tribal conflict, their anxiety related to the consequences of rising poverty in urban centers, their concentration on the relentless spread of the HIV/AIDS virus, and their awareness of the dangers of drug abuse. Many poems are quite complex in the way in which they approach the themes; others are touching in their simplicity. All, however, help reinforce the message that poetry is there to be enjoyed rather than to be shied away from.
