In a world of prejudice and slavery, seven-year-old May learns the power of the written word. She, along with her enslaved nanny, finds that reading gives freedom and harvests a love for something not tangible. Of course, even the simplest liberties, like reading, have huge price tags. This short story targets topics of racism, slavery, and the value of literature as little May learns the severity of the racist world she lives in and the blessing of a good book.
